A common complaint in my practice is how to support healthy ears, especially in children. Children suffer from recurring ear infections which are both painful for the child and upsetting for the parents. I see many parents who are caught up in the conventional medicine trap of one antibiotic after another. Conventional antibiotics might kill the bad bacteria but also destroy the good bacteria or probiotics in our system which we need to keep our immune systems healthy so they can fight future infections.

Ear Symptoms in Children

A common complaint in my practice is how to treat ear infections, especially in children. In order to treat ear infections naturally, we can give natural antibiotics that won’t kill off the good immune-boosting flora. Then, we want to ensure the immune system is functioning optimally and we want to decrease the inflammation in our bodies that leave us susceptible to infections and supplement our systems with a good probiotic. To do this, we must use the herbs that nature has provided to boost the immune system and fight off infections naturally. Whether it’s at the surface level, with an herb called Echinacea, or on the deeper level with an herb called Astragalus, we can stop those infections when they first occur at the surface level or, over time, we can strengthen the immune system on a deeper level to fight these infections off. So if you know your kids are prone to ear infections, you want to make sure you ramp up their immune system so it’s ready to fight the next one. Manually, we can help drain the lymphatic systems of our children, which are found in the head and neck area. Unfortunately, our children’s lymphatic systems don’t drain very well naturally so a lot of excess water and toxins remain in the lymph. An easy way to do this is to do ear exercises on your kids. This also helps with the blood flow in the ear area. First you pull up on the ear, then you pull back on the ear and finally pull down on the ear. Then you’re going to push in gently on the tragus, the outer flap that closes off the canal to the inside of the ear. When you gently push it in, it makes a popping sound. Finally, you’re going to gently massage the back of the head, with downward strokes down the side of the neck. This helps to drain the lymph, but the key is not to press too hard on it, or it will have the opposite effect and will stop draining. You want to do this very gently, about ten times. You can do this to your child or you can teach your child to do it him or herself. Make sure you’re doing it on both sides at the same time. This is a wonderful way to treat the symptoms of an ear infection but also helps to prevent them. So if your kids are prone to them, you should be doing this two to three times a week. In the diet, you want to make sure you avoid dairy and sugar products, as these are risk culprits for ear infections and low immunity. There is always a natural way to cure what ails us. By building up our children’s immune systems with natural products and methods, we can prevent those painful ear infections.
