Keeping the sinuses clear and healthy can be adifficult task for both children and adults. When I think of the sinus area, I picture a dark cave, full of fungus and yeast. And in fact, that’s often what it is. Patient are commonly given prescriptions that may ease the discomfort. Trouble is, the most common prescription, being antibiotics, actually makes the fungus and yeast issue even worse, so more infections develop, more antibiotics, it’s like a vicious treadmill.

Healthy Sinuses

Keeping the sinuses clear and healthy can be adifficult task for both children and adults. When I think of the sinus area, I picture a dark cave, full of fungus and yeast. And in fact, that’s often what it is. Patients are commonly given prescriptions that may ease the discomfort. Trouble is, the most common prescription, being antibiotics, actually makes the fungus and yeast issue even worse, so more infections develop, more antibiotics, it’s like a vicious treadmill. With natural medicine, the first thing I recommend is a good probiotic, which contains the good bacteria and flora, enough to drive out the bad bacteria, fungus and yeast. It’s important to take a good quality probiotic. Next I recommend a saline nasal flush, which you can buy in any drug store. This flushes out the fungus and yeast in your sinuses and should be done on a weekly basis, not just when you’re feeling congested. Prevention here is the key. I also tell me patients to eat vlean, plenty of fresh vegetables and some fruit, but to avoid sugar, which can actually feed the fungus and yeast. This means cutting back on very sweet tropical fruit as well if you live anywhere but on the Equator. It’s tough on children, to eliminate the sugars, but so are sinus infections. Finally, I recommend a good anti-inflammatory supplement, containing the omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA. It keeps your immune system healthy and thus keeps infections at bay. Daily sunlight exposure and grounding are also important for anyone with chronic infections. As a naturopathic; doctor, I believe that preventative measures against illness and disease are most important. By taking care of your health from the inside out, you stand a better chance of not getting sick in the first place.
