Many of my patients take calcium to strengthen the bones, particularly my female patients. Yet few people realize that Magnesium is actually the gatekeeper for the calcium, and without adequate amounts in your system, calcium will be less absorbed. The other important factor is to take these two minerals separately: I recommend taking the magnesium in the morning and the calcium in the evening before bed. Taken together will limit how well they’re absorbed. So how can you tell when you’re missing sufficient amounts of magnesium in your body and you have a magnesium deficiency? There are some sure signs that I’ve learned after my years as a naturopathic doctor.

1) Craving chocolate, particularly women right before or during their periods. Heavy cramping can also be a tell-tale sign of magnesium deficiency. 2) Twitching, of the eyes, or any muscle is an indicator that there isn’t enough magnesium in your system. 3) Heart arrhythmia is another symptom. Magnesium is important for your cardiovascular health. 4) Muscle cramps, after exercising and sweating, you may have lost magnesium. Leg cramps at night can be another sign of magnesium shortage. 5) Headaches, whether tension, cluster or migraine, are also signs. 6) High Blood Pressure can be an indicator. In addition, if you are on a diuretic blood pressure pill, it can actually leech out much of the magnesium in your body. 7) Coffee drinkers: caffeine can also leech out the magnesium in your body. Magnesium is important for cardiovascular health as it can help prevent sudden cardiac arrest or heart attack and stroke. Magnesium is also an important part of any weight loss regime as this important mineral helps in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fat and helps in the recovery of energy from stored body fat.
