Endometriosis is a condition that affects women in which endometrial cells that normally inhabit the endometrium or lining of the uterus, end up in other locations in the body. Endometrial cells can be found in the fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, bladder, liver, surgical scars, lungs and brain. There are even some cases in which endometrial tissue has been found in the nose, causing nosebleeds.

Natural Treatments for Endometriosis

What is Endometriosis? Endometriosis is a condition that affects women in which endometrial cells that normally inhabit the endometrium or lining of the uterus, end up in other locations in the body. Endometrial cells can be found in the fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix, bladder, liver, surgical scars, lungs and brain. There are even some cases in which endometrial tissue has been found in the nose, causing nosebleeds. Endometriosis is estimated to be the leading cause of pelvic pain in women and affects millions of women in North America. More than 50 percent of women with infertility have been diagnosed with endometriosis. Endometriosis Symptoms Endometriosis symptoms vary from woman to woman and can include the following: Pelvic pain- before and during the period, pain during sexual intercourse, pain with bowel movements Irregular bleeding Heavy periods Low back pain, sciatica pains, diarrhea and constipation. What Causes Endometriosis? Mainstream medical experts say there is no known cause for endometriosis. However, in naturopathic medicine, we believe endometriosis is caused by a combination of organ toxicity from environmental exposure to toxic chemicals like PCB’s and dioxins, as well as hormonal imbalance, namely estrogen. There is also a component of inflammation in the body that can be linked to the cause of endometriosis. The good news is that naturopathic protocols including balancing the hormones, diet and specific nutritional supplements can help prevent and treat the symptoms of endometriosis. Endometriosis Diet: The suggested endometriosis diet limits pro-inflammatory foods and toxic foods. Foods that cause inflammation are linked to the increase of prostaglandin synthesis. Prostaglandins are the “Bad guys” that cause an inflammatory cascade in the body and can make the symptoms of endometriosis worse. Some foods are also toxic with environmental toxins such as PCB’s and dioxins. These foods should also be avoided if you have endometriosis. The following is a list of foods to be avoided on the endometriosis diet: Animal saturated fats- They promote the inflammatory response from the prostaglandin formation. Fish- Is usually toxic with PCB’s and dioxins which both aggravate endometriosis Sugar and sweets-cause the inflammatory response. Chocolate- contains sugar which is inflammatory. Dairy- Causes inflammatory reactions and increases the bad prostaglandins. Fried foods- can stimulate negative prostaglandins.Foods to eat for the Endometriosis Diet- Fresh fruits and vegetables are helpful for women suffering with endometriosis. Certain phytochemicals have been proven to help the symptoms of endo, such as flavones in certain vegetables, and indole 3 carbinols in the brassica family of vegetables. Flavones help inhibit the enzyme aromatase, which converts androgens to estrogens. Since too much estrogen is one of the causative factors for endometriosis, estrogens should be avoided from the environment, called xenoestrogens. Certain foods help the balance the hormones and block excessive estrogens. The following list contains foods that should be eaten frequently for endometriosis sufferers. Nuts and seeds- Contain good fats that have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. Sage, Celery and Parsley- Contain flavones that block the enzyme aromatase that converts adrogens to estrogens, thereby decreasing overall estrogen production. Apples, blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, goji berries, acai berries Broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale (indole 3 carbinols) Endometriosis Treatments- Natural endometriosis treatments include the following: Detoxification- It is important to regularly detoxify the body, namely the internal organs including the liver, lungs, digestive tract, skin, and kidneys. Toxic accumulations of PCB’s and dioxins have been linked to the incidence of endometriosis. Omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA- Studies have linked a decrease in the inflammatory response in people who took fish oil supplements with both DHA and EPA. The anti-inflammatory actions of DHA and EPA help decrease the pain of endometriosis and can slow the growth of endometrial tissues. Probiotics- Studies have shown a link between women with endometriosis and an increased incidence of yeast infections. Chronic yeast infections are very common in women and needs to be treated appropriately. Conventional treatments usually do not help to re-establish the good vaginal flora of probiotics. A high quality probiotics supplement that is ingested daily can help eliminate the yeast infections and consequent endometriosis. Probiotics need to have high concentrations of live organisms to be effective and they need to be human microflora. Decrease Stress- Stress reduction techniques are necessary to reduce the strain stress puts on the endocrine and nervous system. In times of stress, our bodies do not function optimally and stress is a causative factor for most disease processes. Try some of the following stress reduction techniques: Yoga- any form of yoga is helpful at connecting body, mind and spirit and helps to reduce stress. Deep breathing exercises- This can help reduce stress in the moment, but even after you do the deep breathing exercises, your body will be in the more relaxed state, or parasympathetic. Meditation- Also helps to get the body into the parasympathetic state. Herbal formulas to decrease stress- if you have difficulties with chronic stress and insomnia, it is advisable to take a natural herbal supplement to help combat these symptoms. . Weight Loss- Excess weight and fat cells are a storage place for toxins, especially xenoestrogens. These are the toxic estrogens that can cause endometriosis and the symptoms of endometriosis to be worse. Fat cells can also produce estrogen, so too much fat, means too much estrogen. High estrogen aggravates endometriosis. Healthy weight loss can be achieved with fixing your hormonal profile, usually starting with fixing your leptin resistance. Fixing your environment is also a key factor to heal your endo. If you live in a blue light toxic and emf toxic environment, no matter what you do with your diet, supplements and herbal program, will not be fully successful unless you mitigate these risks as well. You need to get grounded daily, lower your emf and toxic light exposures and get out into the sun! Endometriosis is a treatable disease and with proper healthy changes, a reversal of the disease can be achieved.
