When veins become varicose, the valves no longer close properly, thus blood flows backwards and enlarges the vein to compensate. Normally, our leg muscles pump the veins to return blood to the heart, against the effects of gravity. This is why regular exercise is so important for the treatment and prevention of varicose veins. What causes varicose veins? Hormonal changes such as pregnancy, menopause and weight gain are among the primary things that causes varicose veins. Aging and lack of exercise also contribute to the often sudden appearance of spider veins and varicose veins. The primary goal should always be prevention of varicose veins. Regular exercise, avoiding sitting or standing for long periods of time and not crossing the legs help to keep the blood flowing in the veins and decrease the pressure on the venous system. Constipation and straining can also cause undue stress and pressure on the venous system and should be avoided. Natural Treatments for Varicose Veins- Regular exercise that involves the legs such as walking, cycling, swimming, dancing and yoga are among my favorites. Avoid standing or sitting for long periods of time. If your job requires this, make sure you take breaks to exercise and move your legs regularly. Avoid crossing your legs while sitting. This blocks blood flow in the legs and can compound the problem of varicose veins. Use compression stockings if necessary to decrease the effects of gravity on the veins and help push blood back to the heart. The herbal medicine Witch Hazel can be helpful if applied externally to the varicose veins. Soak a cotton ball or pad with Witch Hazel and apply to vein for 10 minutes, twice per day. The tannins in Witch Hazel help constrict the vessels, improving tone in the veins and can provide relief of pain and inflammation. Using cold therapy is also helpful as it decreases inflammation. You can soak in a cold bath for 20-40 minutes or apply ice packs to the veins directly for 20 minutes. Flavonoids from raw fruits and vegetables are helpful at decreasing the fragility in the veins and they help quench free radicals that cause cellular damage. Flavonoids also help to keep the tone in the muscles that line the walls of the blood vessels. Bilberry is a fruit/herb used specifically for this reason, as well as darkly pigmented fruits such as blueberries, blackberries, prunes, cranberries and cherries are all high in flavonoids. Green Tea can be a helpful varicose veins treatment. Green tea contains bioflavonoids that help maintain venous structure and function as mentioned above. Green tea is also a natural fat burner and can help you quickly and easily shed unwanted pounds that make varicose veins worse. Varicose veins can be treated and more importantly, prevented by taking care of your physical body with the proper diet and exercise and by avoiding certain bad habits that compromise the circulation through the veins in the body.
