The Overuse of Antibiotics Today

When antibiotics were first discovered in 1928, they were considered a miracle drug that could cure anything and everything. Today, they have been so over-prescribed, that the very bugs they’re designed to conquer have now become immune to them. The bugs have gotten smarter over the years and become resistant to antibiotics, making it dangerous to fight certain diseases where nothing appears to work. An example is flesh-eating disease, which doesn’t seem to have a cure with conventional medicine. Many people have become resistant to all strains of antibiotics so if they become seriously ill, they are stuck. As a naturopathic doctor, I have never believed in the overuse of antibiotics. In fact, I can personally attest to the fact that no one in our family has been on antibiotics for the past ten years. Antibiotics are not the ideal solution, rather they can cause more problems. Keeping your immune system optimal and working on a daily basis is the best thing you can do to fight potential bacteria and fungi. How do you do this? There are many natural solutions that have worked for centuries and are as effective today. 1)Garlic will kill off bacteria, chewing two or three garlic cloves will stave off potential problems, and while your breath may need some help afterwards, it’s a natural solution that easily works. 2) Oregano Oil which you can get at any Health Food Store is a natural anti-biotic. It kills viruses, fungi and bacteria and is one of nature’s best secrets for fighting infections. I prefer tablets of oregano oil over the liquid as the liquid is hard on the liver. 3) Echinacea is an herbal flower that is known to help combat infections and raise the immune system. It comes in many formats, like tablets or liquids. All these natural solutions can help combat common bacteria and infections without any of the side effects of conventional antibiotics. Of course, always seek the advice of your health care practitioner to ensure the best options for treatment for your particular case.
