Thyroid Disease & Low Thyroid Function

Many of my patients, particularly women, develop low thyroid function and thyroid disease. Some of the symptoms are low energy, headaches, cold hands and feet and having a hard time keeping warm, as well as difficulty losing weight. There are natural ways to overcome these symptoms.Leptin resistance is one of the culprits, that causes a cascade of hormonal imbalances in the body, one of which is the functioning of the thyroid gland. This offsets the brain’s ability to be the master conductor of the symphony of all the other hormonal signalling in the body, and the thyroid is a major one. Fixing leptin resistance is mandatory in order to fix the thyroid gland and it’s function. Another reason the thyroid declines is because of toxicity, especially heavy metals such as mercury, aluminum, barium, arsenic and antimony. Surprisingly these are things that we’re exposed to on a daily basis. These toxins travel through the blood and end up stuck in the thyroid. The thyroid gland is located at the front of the neck and, once toxic, it doesn’t function optimally. So what can we do naturally? Detoxification is the critical first step. You should detoxify your internal organs at least four times a year, at the change of the seasons. Even if you don’t have low thyroid function, detoxification works as a preventative measure as well, keeping your system clean and functioning optimally. Find a natural whole food supplement that contains no additional fillers or synthetics to help you detoxify the internal organs. As a Naturopathic doctor, I believe in getting to the root cause of a problem and not just treating the symptoms. With the thyroid, once the toxins are cleared and the leptin resistance is reversed, it will begin to function optimally again and your symptoms will disappear. The other thing that you can do is to check your basal body temperature. This is done first thing in the morning, before getting out of bed and before moving. You keep a thermometer by your bed and take your temperature first thing. Now if the temperature is consistently lower than normal body temperature then you have a good indicator that your thyroid function is low. You should start the detox process and get your body free of toxins. This will rev up your metabolism and get your thyroid functioning normally again. The other thing you can do is to add a little bit of iodized salt to your diet. Iodine is a natural booster for the thyroid and while many people have cut their salt intake in an effort to be healthier, a little bit of iodized salt or iodized sea salt will help your thyroid function.
