Tips for Stress and Low Mood

Most of my patients over the years suffered from stress and anxiousness. They were often in an anxiety state and this affected their daily lives and often lead to depression. As a naturopathic doctor, my motto is that you need not suffer. There are natural solutions for supporting a healthy nervous system and mind. The first thing I recommend is to get adequate sleep. The number of hours can vary per person, some people need 8 hours, some need 10 and some require as little as 6. I suggest that you try to get 8 hours of good quality, deep restful sleep each night. To do so, it’s important that you sleep in a dark room. This helps the light receptors that we have in all our skin cells shut down the active hormones of the day and increase the melatonin. It’s also important to go to sleep and wake up at about the same time every day, as this regulates our internal body clock. Adequate rest allows us to wake up energized every morning, ready to face the day, and better able to handle life’s daily stressors. Looking at the sunrise every morning without sunglasses is a simple technique you can use to set up your entire brain and hormonal secretion for the rest of the day. Meditation is very helpful and a good daily practice. It helps to quiet the mind, shutting off those negative thoughts that lead to anxiety and depression. Many people find it difficult to stop the thought the first few times they try to meditate, but as with all things, practice makes it easier. When you meditate, you can also visualize a calming scene or place, this too helps to quiet the mind. Positive images will give you positive thoughts. The Law of Attraction is always at play. When you have negative thoughts, you are manifesting that negativity and often, negative things will come back to you. The opposite is quite true. Manifest positive images and thoughts, and they will manifest into your life. This helps to keep anxiety and depression at bay. Your life can change almost magically when you manifest positivity. Waking up well-rested, ready to face the day, is a great way to keep those anxious thoughts away. It allows you to get your life back, if you’ve been adversely affected by stress in the past. I always told my patients, your health is truly in your hands. You can take steps to live a healthy, energized and positive life.
