I have always believed that chemically produced supplements can actually do more harm than good. Such is the case with synthetic beta carotene. Three large-scale studies found that, not only does synthetic beta carotene not provide any health benefits, two of them found that it can actually increase your risk of lung cancer, in smokers and those who’d been exposed to asbestos. It’s been linked to other cancers as well.
