Why you shouldn't take Vitamin C Supplements?

Real Vitamin C comes from fresh produce, like oranges, dark leafy greens (kale, mustard greens, garden cress), strawberries, kiwi, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, papayas, guavas and hot chili peppers. On the other hand, the Vitamin C products found on shelves are actually ascorbic acid.

Ascorbic acid is made by combining corn syrup, hydrogenated sugar, acetone and hydrochloric acid. Which means it's totally synthetic and can actually do more harm than good. A U.S. study showed that ascorbic acid sold as Vitamin C can actually make your artery walls thicker, increasing your chances of getting heart disease. A Canadian study showed that even mega-doses of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) sometimes caused scurvy, the one disease thought to be cured by Vitamin C. Finally, a study in England conducted over five years showed no improvement in cardiovascular health when taking Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), yet just a slight increase (3 servings) of fresh fruit and vegetables led to a 22% decrease in stroke risk. Other studies have shown a link between synthetic Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and genotoxins that can lead to cancer. These all confirm what I've always known, that the best and only way of getting nutrients is to get them from fresh produce or from whole-food supplements.

Real vitamin C has nutrients like bio-flavonoids that help our body better absorb it. Synthetic Vitamin C has none of the benefits and can actually be bad for your health. This is why I created my whole-food VitaFruits and VitaVeggies. They are high ORAC value Fruits and Vegetables that have been freeze-dried and put into a convenient capsule form. Together, they give you approximately an extra seven servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

As a naturopathic doctor, I've always tried to promote the most natural, healthy choices to my patients. When I couldn't find whole-food supplements that were free of fillers and synthetics, I created my VitaTree line of products. Please leave me your comments below. Are you currently taking Vitamin C?
